My 2024 Commitment to Myself

Dear Witchy Writer,

I have a new practice I want to commit to for my personal development in 2024, and that is taking regular Days of Leisure.

Here’s how it works. I’m going to pick one weekend day each week to not manage anything, be in charge of anything, or plan anything.

This is a day where I become totally unavailable to answer questions, to locate things in the house, or to figure out what to do next about anything.

The Day of Leisure is my day to not just rest my body but also to rest my mind from the work of making things happen.

When I have done Days of Leisure in the past, they have felt like my greatest days. I’ve slipped into a world of not needing to know what time it was, who was doing what or when, or needing to function at even a basic level to make the day work. Relaxation!

Recently, when I was thinking about the year ahead, I realized my soul was craving Days of Leisure not as a random treat here and there but as a regular thing.

And here’s what I know: a year is a long time to keep a practice like this going. It’s also a great period of time to get a habit started, to face the challenges and obstacles that will derail the habit, and to revive the habit with new wisdom and strength. And my life will be more wonderful for the journey.

I’m curious, is there a practice you would love to commit to this year, one that you’ll do imperfectly, but that will lead you to a life that feels enriching and beautiful?

xo,

Emma

P.S. If you’re craving a book to help you break out of the mid-winter doldrums, then I highly recommend Julia Child’s memoir, My Life in France. I’ve been listening to the audiobook and loving the descriptions of the French countryside, Paris, and Marseille. Also, her journey of finding her life’s calling through loving French cuisine is inspiring!

P.P.S. I picked an oracle card to inspire this blog post. I got the Chamomile card, which is about rest and relaxation. If you’d love to know more about how to use oracle cards in your writing practice, sign up for my free masterclass, How to Write With Oracle Cards.
